Media Landscapes: Does Anybody Still Need Music Media?

Magazines and newspapers devoted to music. Radio stations playing pop music all day. Whole TV stations dedicated to playing music videos. There was a time when it seemed we really needed them to stay in touch. Not any more. The public can get by quite happily without them. In fact it's only the music business that really needs them, to review its products and to put its artists on pedestals. And it's no longer in a position to subsidise them. David Hepworth looks back on 40 years of writing and broadcasting about music, looking at where the model came apart, what happened to the public mind and wondering, is anyone going to step up and pay or will it all just fade away?
