Rykka
Rykka started as a Folk
singer. Born in Vancouver as Christina Maria, the Swiss musician used to play
her relaxed, acoustic songs in cafés for the time being. She recorded two
albums and one EP but at some point she just got fed up with her songs. It felt
as if someone had turned the switch. She changed her acoustic guitar for an
electric one and added synths in the studio. All of the sudden, the music
turned into dance tracks, the guitar generated distortions and feedback.
Rykka plays Rock that
sounds like a punch in the face. “Kodiak” is the title of her recent record on
which she completed her change of style. Written in an isolated cottage in
Europe and recorded back in Vancouver - the city situated at the ocean and not
far away from high mountains. Sean Penner was involved as the sound engineer on
this record, he has previously worked with bands such as We Say Party, You Say
Die. The songs on “Kodiak” are written from the perspective of animals. Rykka
slips into the brain of a crow or sees the world through the eyes of a deep sea
fish. Unusual poetry from an unusual and exciting new artist.
