The Wedding Present
Some bands age with difficulties, a stiff pose accompanied by too many
clichés. Not The Wedding Present! Describing them as legends sounds way too
dusty. But that’s what they are. Bandleader David Gedge and his ever-changing
line-up have achieved a lot in the last 27 years. With their first album in
1987 The Wedding Present released an iconographic debut, a pearl of Indie music
so to speak. What followed were records under the influence of Noise,
Experimental and Surf. Then in 1997 it went quiet for a couple of years. But
after almost seven years The Wedding Present are back. Despite their openness
regarding musical influences and colourful timbres, nothing has changed on
their recent album “Valentina”: Gedge’s characteristic deep voice and the
bitter sweet lyrics are still as beautiful as ever. His choice of words is the
reason why people tend to see Gedge more as a modern poet rather than a
songwriter. But it wouldn’t be the same without the music and that’s why we see
him as the great musician he is: refreshing, lively and thrilling!
